How does the VS1 Smart Contact Sensor Work?
1. Your door is closed
When your door is closed, the two halves of the VS1 are lined up with each other, with the small section containing a magnet. The magnet tells the sensor, contained in the larger section, that the door/window is closed, due to the magnet in the sensor being close to the sensor’s own built in magnet.
2. Your door is opened
When your door/window is opened, the magnetic connection between the sensor and the magnet is broken, due to the magnet moving further away from the sensor as the door is opened. Once that connection is broken, the sensor knows that the door/window is open. Simple!
3. Push notifications
With the sensor knowing the magnetic connection between the two parts is broken, Apple’s smart home system can then send an instant push notification to your iPhone or Apple Watch, to let you know the moment a door or window has been opened or closed.
But there’s more…
Smart Connections with the VS1 Smart Contact Sensor and Apple HomeKit
The VS1 Smart Contact Sensor doesn’t just notify you of when a door or window is open or closed; it can also control other smart devices in your HomeKit-enabled smart home. For example, you can create an automation so that when your VS1 is attached to a bedroom window, and that window is opened, it automatically turns off your VAP1 Smart Air Purifier. Maybe you want the smart lights in your entrance hallway to come on when you open the front door, but only after 6pm, this can be easily automated with the help of the VS1. Or maybe if that door is closed after 9am, Monday to Friday, it automatically sets the alarm system to Away. The possibilities are endless, especially when you consider that not only is the VS1 great for convenience and care-free automation, it can also be a great security device too…
What if the worst were to happen, and an intruder breaks in through a window whilst you and your family are asleep? With a few VS1 sensors connected to your vulnerable doors and windows, you can ensure that not only will you get notified of any unauthorized entry into your home, but you can even create an automation to turn on all of the lights, to send the intruder packing in no time at all.
Finally, maybe you have your own special ‘man cave’ in the basement of your home, and want your music system and your Flowerbud Smart Diffuser to turn on to get everything smelling fresh the moment you enter. With the VS1 connected to your basement door, you can automate a smart plug to turn on your music system, and get the Flowerbud to start diffusing, as well as turn on the color mood light at the same time.
Some Things Just go Together…
Door opens – Turn on Smart Lights
The VS1 works great in combination with smart bulbs, like the VOCOlinc L3, for example. Create a simple automation to set your hallway lights to a warm and inviting white, when you open the door after a long day at the office, or maybe set the lights to a lovely shade of blue when you close the living room door for ‘Movie Night’.
Window opens – Turn off Air Purifier
The VS1 isn’t just for doors, so you can also add it to a window for example. A great use case for the VS1 in this manner might be in combination with the VAP1 PureFlow Smart Air Purifier. When the window opens, turn off the Air Purifier to save on your energy bills.
Close the Blinds – Turn on the Diffuser
As the VS1 works with Apple HomeKit, it can talk to other devices, and work ‘smart’ with them. Imagine the air outside is a bit polluted and you want the room to smell nice – simply create an automation that turns the VOCOlinc Flowerbud Smart Diffuser on when the blinds are closed using the VS1, but only between certain hours of the day.
Slimmer and more stylish than the rest…
The VS1 is one of the slimmest HomeKit enabled contact sensors on the market, at only 0.35″ deep for the main sensor, and an even slimmer 0.31″ for the magnet. It also has a stylish and modern look, that goes beyond mere function, with its distinctive circular green LED that flashes momentarily to let you know it is functioning correctly. The matt finish also gives off a premium look and feel to only add to an impressive looking device.
Installation: Easy as 1-2-3
Prepare your device
Prepare the door or window for where the VS1 is destined to be placed, by making sure the surfaces are free of dust or grease, to ensure the included double-sided adhesive stickers will adhere properly.
Place on your door/window
Add them to the appropriate location, ensuring there’s no more than an inch between the sensor and magnet, and the dots on both parts are lined up with each other.
Add to HomeKit
Press and hold the green pairing button on the VS1 to begin the pairing process, that takes place in the Apple Home app;
1. Select ‘Add Accessory’
2. Scan the QR code
3. Select which room the device belongs in
Changing the battery
Changing the battery is even easier, with a very convenient and easy to access cover plate on the back of the sensor. The VS1 uses easily available CR2032 batteries, which should last up to 6 months with typical usage.
A Breeze to Automate Your Home (Apple Home Hub* Required): Open a door to activate a custom scene, which engages other HomeKit-enabled products, using the Home app on your iPhone/iPad/ Apple Watch. Have your house automatically illuminate to greet you on entry, but only after 6 pm. Have your lights turn bright when your baby opens a storage area with potentially dangerous objects. Turn off the air conditioner when you open the windows in your room
Immediate Notifications: Your HomeKit Home will send a notification to your Apple devices when anything equipped with the status of the VS1 changes. Get real-time status via Siri and your iPhone/iPad/Apple Watch before you leave your house, or when it is about to rain so that you will never forget to close your doors or windows. Remote access requires an Apple Home Hub*
Ultra-low Power Consumption and Snappy performance: up to 6 months battery life achieved by exclusive energy-saving technology and Bluetooth Low Energy technology (5.0); it uses a CR2032 button battery (included in standard packaging), which can be easily replaced
